We use Semaglutide, coaching, and diet options to help you lose weight successfully. Semaglutide is a GLP-1 agonist originally used as an injection to help treat Type 2 Diabetes. However, it has also shown to be effective in weight loss for patients. The semaglutide and trizepatide medications also known as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound have changed the whole landscape when it comes to weight loss. Many patients who have had trouble losing weight have shown significant weight loss when given slightly higher doses of these drugs. The medications also have a really good safety profile on top of it all.

At Capital Area Plastic Surgery we take a holistic approach in dealing with weight loss. We use a weekly regimen of semaglutide medication over 12 weeks combined with coaching and a diet plan. You are followed and supported throughout your whole journey with us. This “thin shot” is given weekly safely and effectively. The shot is from a very small needle and therefore patients experience minimal discomfort. We also give a cocktail of vitamins sub muscularly when you get your semaglutide shot. This helps with energy as one of the most common side effects of semaglutide is fatigue. The Vitamin shot is also very safe and effective.

What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutides are a class of drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists. They work by functioning like the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) hormone in the body. They attach to the GLP-1 receptor and then a few things happen.

 

Insulin increases
Gastric emptying is delayed
You feel fuller quicker when eating
Slows glucagon release (this reduces blood sugar levels)
All these things combine cause better insulin, blood sugar, and calorie control leading to significant weight loss in most cases. Patients start to consume fewer calories due to the above hormonal changes. The first semaglutide was Ozempic, this was used to treat Type 2 Diabetes and help do this to lower people’s A1C, a blood marker measuring sugar and diabetic control. What they pleasantly found out was that there was an added benefit where patients were losing weight and doing it safely. This was followed by the release of the drug called Wegovy which is used strictly to treat obesity. Both are semaglutides.  

What is Tirzepatide?

Tirzepatide is also used to treat Type 2 Diabetes and obesity. However, it differs in its mechanism of action compared to a semaglutide. Most people know tirzepatide by the trade names Mounjaro and Zepbound. Tirzepatide combines 2 hormonal mechanisms of action; one like the GLP-1  (glucagon-like-peoptide-1) and the other, GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide). This drug also reduces appetite and changes the body’s metabolism to promote weight loss.

 

How is Semaglutide And Tirzepatide given?

Both of these drugs are simply given in our office by way of a once weekly injection. The injection is given with a very small needle usually by pinching the skin behind the upper arm and delivering the medication just under the skin. It is usually not painful, and the needle is very thin. The advantage of these medications is that patients do not feel hungry, and they don’t feel like they are on a regimented diet program. Now in our clinic, we provide diet support which is easy to follow, and coaching to help you keep healthy and reach your desired weight.

Where do we get our Semaglutide?

Our semaglutide and tirzepatide is sourced from an FDA-approved compounding pharmacy. The medications are prepared by a pharmacist with a prescription by Dr. Koumanis. By compounding the medications specific doses are provided in a cost-effective manner. We mostly use semaglutide as it is more cost-effective and for most people provides excellent results.

How Effective is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is an extremely effective weight-loss medication. This was proven in several medical studies, with one study enrolling almost 2000 patients. The study showed that patients lost up to 15% of their body weight with an average weight loss of 35 lbs. All of the studies showed that semaglutide was a safe and effective weight-loss drug.

Is Semaglutide safe and what are the side effects?

Many diet medications have come and gone here in the United States over the last three decades. Most of the previous diet medications had too many side effects that were not tolerated by patients making the drugs ineffective for use. Semaglutide however, was shown in clinical trials to be effective and well tolerated. Patients who underwent semaglutide treatment greater than one year were shown to complete the treatment over 90% of the time, making this a well-tolerated treatment for weight loss. The most common side effects included some nausea and fatigue but in general semaglutide is really well-tolerated. We treat any nausea with natural and prescription medications that are also safe and effective if needed. We also give weekly vitamin injections if needed to combat any fatigue. These are safe and very cost-effective ways to treat any minor side effects. But again, most patients tolerate semaglutide extremely well.

Semaglutide Treatment

Here at Capital Area Plastic Surgery, patients can come and start their weight loss journey. Some patients may want to come in and lose weight or achieve their ideal weight before their plastic surgery. Others may just want to come in for weight loss treatment alone to feel and look better. Both are welcome here. The treatment consists of weekly injections, diet coaching, weekly vitamin injections, and monthly progress visits.

Who is a Good Candidate for Semaglutide Treatment?

Patients who are good candidates:

Patients with a BMI greater than 25 and in general good health.
Patients who want to lose weight and improve their overall body and shape.
Patients who want to lose weight before cosmetic surgery

At Capital Area Plastic Surgery we have a BMI limit of 33 for body contour procedures such as the tummy tuck and torso lift. Therefore, patients with a BMI greater than 33 are good candidates for semaglutide therapy in order to lose weight and preoperatively and prepare them for their procedures.

Patients who are not good candidtes

Patients who are not good candidates:

A history of Diabetes and taking diabetic medications
A history of pancreatitis
A history of medullary thyroid cancer
Unrealistic expectations (this will be discussed in your consultation)

Your Semaglutide SKINNY SHOT Consultation

All patients will meet with Dr. Koumanis for their skinny shot consultation and all treatments. A specific treatment plan will be discussed after a full history and physical examination is done. The treatment plan will include weekly semaglutide injections, coaching, and a specific diet plan to help you reach your ideal body weight and reduce visceral fat. We will discuss the benefits and possible side effects of semaglutide therapy during your visit. If this is done in preparation for a surgical procedure, then we will also discuss your surgical procedure in detail. However, patients do not have to undergo plastic surgery to receive a personalized treatment plan with semaglutide.

Cost of Semaglutide in Latham and Glens Falls, NY

Our cost for the program is $900 for the first 6 weeks of treatment and $800 for the second 6 weeks of treatment. This includes all consultations with Dr. Koumanis, all coaching, diet planning, and all injections of semaglutide and vitamins. If treatment is needed after 12 weeks then a custom treatment plan is created. Without insurance pricing on GoodRx for the pens of semaglutide for 4 weeks is $1391.34; this brings the 6-week price to $2,087.01
